"The two main sources of skill between movie theaters are the price of the tickets and the film shown". This has been pointed out by Javier Elizalde, professor at the School of Economics and Business Sciences of the University of Navarra, in his doctoral thesis .

The study shows that location is another of the most influential factors in the sector. Thus, a price increase of 1% reduces attendance to a movie by 2.3%, while if the increase is made by another cinema that is less than two kilometers away, it produces an increase in attendance of 2%.

Regarding the exhibition of movies in other theaters, Javier Elizalde has shown that the attendance to a movie is reduced by 23% if a theater located less than 5 kilometers away shows the same movie, while if the theater is between 5 and 10 kilometers away the reduction in the attendance is 15%. Thus, "it can be concluded that the attendance to a movie depends mainly on the price of the entrance, the movie and the location of the theater," he said.

Guipúzcoa, Navarra, La Rioja and Valladolid, provinces with the largest number of visitors in the North of the country

The professor of the University of Navarra also underlines in his work the great transformation that this economic sector has undergone. "It is increasingly suffering the skill by other means of film viewing (such as Internet, TV movie channels and DVD rentals), going from 146 million viewers in 2001 to 110 million in 2009, according to figures from the Ministry of Culture".

Likewise, within the market itself, there has been a change in the structure. A large issue number of movie theaters have been closed and new generation cinemas with a high issue number of screens have been opened, generally in shopping malls. Specifically, the issue number of cinemas has dropped from 1,298 in 2000 to 851 in 2009, while the issue number of screens has increased from 3,500 to 4,082 in that period.

In the case of Pamplona, this change has not been as drastic as in other capitals, despite the closure of some cinemas and the opening of other multiplexes, since in cities such as Gijón and Oviedo five cinemas have been closed during the last ten years. Finally, he explained that in the northern part of Spain, where the study has been applied, the provinces with the highest attendance to cinemas are Guipúzcoa, Navarra, La Rioja and Valladolid.
