The School of Nursing of the University of Navarra will create the first chapter in Spain in the context of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honorary Society of Nursing. "Sigma was the first American organization to fund nursing research," explains Begoña Errasti, professor at School and coordinator of project: "We are committed to the creation of a Chapter because, in addition to valuing the fundamental role that nurses play in people's health, it recognizes the need and importance of creating channels that promote excellence and leadership among nurses".
On the occasion of this membership, School Nursing hosted an event featuring Boston College Professor Dorothy Jones, who delivered a session entitled. Celebrating Nursing discipline . "Sigma recognizes the importance of knowledge, leadership and scholarship in a community of nurse leaders by creating opportunities to support and enhance nursing's collective impact on health globally," explained Professor Jones: "the organization offers its members many grant opportunities to support research, along with educational and research programs supported by Sigma."
Currently, there are approximately 540 chapters in more than 700 institutions of Education worldwide, such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, England, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Pakistan, Portugal, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and the United States.
One hundred years of history
In 1922, six students from the training School for Nurses at Indiana University (USA) founded the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, now called Sigma. It is the second largest nursing organization in the world, with approximately 135,000 active members. For its expansion, chapters are created, i.e., local groups of students, researchers and nurse leaders who are formally admitted to Sigma by fulfilling a series of requirements. Each chapter, which follows Sigma's organizational laws, elects its own members. Annual meetings and events are held , and seminars and projects are offered to advance knowledge and nursing leadership. In addition, research is funded, and awards and recognition are offered.
