Space technology and blockchain to strengthen traceability in the agri-food chain

The Technology Center Ceit, participates in the project Space4green that combines data obtained through Copernicus space remote sensing technology and satellite navigation systems of the Galileo constellation, with blockchain.

Space4green, part of the European HORIZON EUROPE program, aims to provide the agri-food chain data with reliable tracking and traceability throughout the supply chain, reinforcing the European Union's strategy in this area.

"Trusted and Green Traceability trough European Union Space Technologies", also known as Space4green, is a project developed with the goal to create a new system that combines navigation and remote sensing space technologies with blockchain with the goal to promote traceability of products within the agri-food chain.

The Technology Center Ceit participates in this project led by business Integrasys. Space4Green is framed within the European HORIZON EUROPE program and ascribed to agreement of the European Union Space Programme Agency (EUSPA) (No. 101082630). It also has two more Spanish partners, La Denominación de Origen Protegida Aceite de Lucena and the Federación de Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de Andalucía, which will participate in the use cases; two Greek partners, Agrotikos Synetairismos Pellas and Agro APPS; the Estonian business Guardtime OU; the Slovenian innovation center ITC (Inovacijsko Tehnoloski Grozd Murska Sobota) and the Cypriot center Strategic Omnia Research and Technology Development.

Integration of space technology and blockchain

Space4green aims to provide the agri-food chain data with reliable traceability information along the entire supply chain. These data will provide information on the status of the goods (such as temperature or humidity), and will be able to corroborate compliance with requirements regulations, such as certificates of origin or sanitary certificates.

The consortium will work for two years on the development of a tool that combines data obtained from the Galileo and Copernicus satellite constellations, with the processing and accommodation of data securely on the blockchain, allowing the use of global positioning to be reliable and securely traceable.

Prototype validation

To validate the prototype, Space4Green has agreed on six demonstration cases to be carried out in different territories.

On the one hand, in order to improve certification of origin, transparency and product traceability, four food supply chains have been chosen: a Slovenian local agri-food system, two Designations of Origin - a Spanish one for oil and a Cypriot one for wine - and the implementation and monitoring of the Common Agricultural Policy in Andalusia. In these four cases, blockchain and Galileo technologies will be used to accelerate the digital transformation of the agri-food sector and optimize the exchange of data along the entire chain.

In addition, Space4Green will generate an environmental sustainability index certifiable (ESI) from the information obtained by Copernicus. This index will provide detailed information on the agronomic practices of the producers from whom they buy the raw subject and a carbon emissions calculation tool to know the environmental impact of the food in question.

High precision for all links of the chain

At final, Space4Green offers the agri-food sector a traceability system that is simpler and more competitive than existing ones, guaranteeing the original quality of products and providing reliable information on the origin and production of foodstuffs. All links in the chain will benefit from the application of this system, from the primary sector, which will have the original quality of its products guaranteed throughout the supply chain, to the end consumer, who will obtain reliable information on the origin and production of the food he or she is about to consume.
