A theologian of the University of Navarra compiles in a book four treatises of Ambrose of Milan on Christian virginity
According to Domingo Ramos-Lissón, these writings "have had a considerable influence on the living of consecrated virginity and Christian asceticism throughout the centuries."
Domingo Ramos-Lissón, Professor Emeritus of the School de Teología has published the book Ambrose of Milan: Writings on Virginity.. The volume, which belongs to the Library Services of Patristics of the publishing house Ciudad Nueva, gathers four treatises of Ambrose of Milan on Christian virginity. They are: On Virgins, Virginity, The Virgin's Education and Exhortation to Virginity.
Professor Ramos-Lissón, who has written the introductions, translation and notes to the work, points out that these writings of Ambrose of Milan "have had a considerable influence on the experience of consecrated virginity and Christian asceticism throughout the centuries".
The theologian explains that the Western Christian virgins of the fourth century lived "a dedication to God in the bosom of their own family, although they occupied a distinguished place in the Eucharistic celebrations".
As he adds, "this holy bishop of Milan sample a determined effort to emphasize the supernatural character of virginity, against the claims of those who did not understand this way of Christian life. The young Christian women who decided to lead this kind of life had to overcome the prejudices of the surrounding paganism, both with regard to the Roman 'vestals' and the selfishness of the father of the family, who at that time exercised almost absolute power".
