The Theological Collection of the School of Theology of the University of Navarra has published a new degree scroll. It is 'Christ exalted on the cross. Exegesis and contemporary theology', by Jorge Federico Herrera Gabler. This brings to 128 the number of titles published by the collection since its inception in 1971.

review from the book

For Walter Kasper, the paschal theology of John's Gospel, with its unity of cross, exaltation and resurrection, is the greatest theology imaginable. But to what extent is there clarity about this magnificent theology? This book attempts to better understand the meaning of the exaltation of Jesus Christ on the cross, according to Jn 3:14f, 8:28 and 12:32, and to offer a state of the question in contemporary exegesis and theology.

Four lines of thought have been identified among exegetes who affirm respectively that the verb u`you/n ("to be exalted") is to be understood: a) simply as crucifixion; b) referring primarily to the ascension; c) more broadly than simply crucifixion; or d) referring to crucifixion as the first act of exaltation/ascension.

Some critical reflections are offered on the various opinions, highlighting the most interesting ones and trying to approach the answer to the questions that underlie this issue that has always interested Christian thought: What is essential in the concept of exaltation in John's Gospel? In what sense is it possible to speak of a glorification in the cross?
