"The proportion of the population over 65 years of age in rural areas is almost double the national average . In fact, it reaches 31% compared to 18% in the rest of the country". Isabel Rodríguez Tejedo, professor at School of Economics and Business Sciences of the University of Navarra, warned about some of the problems that occur in rural areas and that especially affect women.

The expert intervened in the "meeting rural for equality and conciliation in the Merindad de Olite", organized by the association of Families and Women of the Rural Environment of Navarra on the occasion of the International Day of Rural Women.
According to Isabel Rodríguez Tejedo, women leave the rural areas more than men and their rate of activity is lower than men's. "For example, in the period 2003-2007 there was a reduction in of women holding farms, close to 10%", she said. "For example, in the period 2003-2007 there was a reduction in the issue of women farm owners, close to 10%," she pointed out.

On the other hand, although it is not easy to define the prototype rural woman, as the economist explained, "we can mention some shared challenges such as the masculinization of the environment, the responsibility for the dependent population, limitations to mobility and self-mobility, the comparative scarcity of public services and institutional support networks, as well as of recognized and salaried positions in work ".

Public and private effort to reduce social and geographic isolation

Thus, "the rural development involves the fixation of the population in these areas, especially women, through the continuous training , the knowledge of existing resources, and the public and private effort to reduce social and geographic isolation".

Also participating in the meeting were the president of Afammer-Navarra, Rosalía Echeverría; Mª Isabel García Malo, councilor of Social Affairs, Family, Youth and Sports; the director of high school Navarro for Equality, Sara Ibarrola; and the president of Afammer national, Carmen Quintanilla. Likewise, Luis Goñi Jiménez, from the Women's Legal Assistance Service of high school of the Tafalla Bar Association, gave a talk at discussion paper on "What does the Organic Law 3/2007 for the effective equality of women and men mean for the development of women's full citizenship".
