While studying biotechnology at Degree in Madrid, María de Aramburu Lamas not only got to know the life of laboratory, but also the world of business. For this reason, in her last year of degree program, she decided that she wanted to immerse herself in this branch of business and enrolled in the Master's Degree of management of Pharma-Biotech companies at the University of Navarra. This Master's Degree, as Maria describes, has allowed her to have a more global vision of pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and has added to her previous scientific knowledge .
After five intense months of classes, María began her search for an internship. "It was a very stressful time, but in the end it helped us to learn what the day-to-day is like in the search for a work and how to face different interviews," she says, noting that she was contacted via LinkedIn by Javier del Río Sastre, vice president of marketing and sales at Health_in_Code, one of the largest non-reproductive genomics companies in Europe.
"The first day at business I remember being very nervous, but eager to get started. My first few days were all about learning. I read a lot about what clinical areas they work in, what specific diseases are within each area and what diagnostic techniques are used," she says.
In order to have a complete vision of the company, during her internship Maria rotates through different positions. She spends 40% of her time supporting the marketing and sales department at department , where she performs tasks such as development of the website, market analysis, assessment sales, among others. Subsequently, another 40% will be dedicated to the post of tenders, where the search for public tenders of interest to business will be carried out. In addition, he/she will assist in administrative tasks.
With still many months to go, Maria appreciates that this experience will be a constant learning experience for further training. For now, she has mainly learned how to monitor the sales of a business with the goal to guide and generate action plans for the sales staff, and thus achieve the objectives set by Health in Code.
"I love the possibility of being able to see the scientific and business worlds so closely, to continue my training in biotechnology and to acquire the necessary business knowledge" reflects María, and she assures that, although she is still deciphering her long-term plans deadline, she aspires in the future to continue her professional training in order to gradually acquire new responsibilities and to grow in the world of work.
