A study by the University of Navarra confirms the "vitality of the regional lexicon" among young people in the region

María Areta's thesis describes 96 regional voices, 29 of frequent use; among them, 'pantaloneta', 'pochas', 'bajera', 'robada' or 'fregadera'.

María Areta, researcher at the department of Hispanic Linguistics and Modern Languages of the University of Navarra, has carried out a study on the vocabulary of young people in the Comunidad Foral. The work, which is part of her doctoral thesis , confirms the "vitality of the regional lexicon among this group population", since in the surveys conducted 96 regional voices have been found, 29 of which obtain quite high rates of availability in the Navarrese pre-university students.

Among these terms are pantaloneta, bajera, fregadera, alubias verdes, pochas, villavesa, robada, pescatero, etc., which, as the author explains, are more available than their corresponding terms in general Spanish among young Navarrese.

Likewise, María Areta has studied the incidence of several socio-cultural factors in the configuration of her lexicon. The study -subsidized with a scholarship from department of Education of the Government of Navarra-, shows the quantitative and qualitative incidence of several social determinants -sex, subject of center, residency program family, sociocultural level, language mother tongue, model linguistic, etc.- in the answers of 430 pre-university students from Navarra.

The analysis shows that among the current youth population "there are still differences motivated by the 'sex' factor", as the author explains. Thus, in relation to the topic 'professions and trades', each group generally resorts earlier to names of professions that have traditionally been linked to their sex: in the lists of women, words such as nurse, housewife, administrative assistant appear in the first positions compared to those of men, in which bricklayer, truck driver, fireman, policeman or plumber occupy the first positions.

Another social determinant that sample differences between groups is the 'residency program family', which establishes distinctions between urban and rural youth in the update of dialectal terms, in favor of students residing in rural areas.

Diccionario Panhispánico de Léxico available

Currently, several Spanish and Latin American researchers are participating in the elaboration of the Diccionario Panhispánico de Léxico available. Navarra will collaborate in the edition of this volume through the contribution of the work carried out by a team researcher, directed by Professor Cristina Tabernero. This team carried out the surveys that served as the basis for María Areta's thesis .
