Professors of the Chair de Patrimonio present the book 'El arte del Barroco en Navarra'.
The professors of the Chair of Navarrese Art and HeritageRicardo Fernández Gracia, Pilar Andueza Unanua, José Javier Azanza López and María Concepción García Gainza presented their book El arte del Barroco en Navarra, published by the Government of Navarra. The event, which took place in the chapel of the Museum of Navarra, was presided over by President Yolanda Barcina. The publication adds to the volumes of the same series, where the Romanesque and the Renaissance have been studied.
During the presentation, Ricardo Fernández Gracia, coordinator of the work, acknowledged that this publication proposes "a journey to the reality of the 17th and 18th centuries through its cultural assets, which are the expression of that society and at the same time a unique means of communication". He also insisted on how the art of the Baroque tried to captivate through the senses, much more fragile than the intellect, and highlighted the interest in showing the heritage of those centuries in a way multidisciplinary: as history, aesthetics, use and function, iconography and techniques.
He also pointed out that "this synthesis evaluates outstanding ensembles in all the arts of the Baroque centuries, throughout the different periods and contexts, which place us before a B panorama in which an aesthetic flourished that was very apt to enervate and move the individual through the senses, which are always more vulnerable than the intellect".
For her part, the president of the Government of Navarre assured that the elaboration of this work constitutes "an important advance in the knowledge and consideration" of an art in Navarre, the Baroque, about which for a long time there was a "generalized lack of interest" until a few decades ago and in the face of the great evaluation of other styles.
The work has 477 pages and a thousand copies have been published, which will be on sale at the price of 36 euros in bookstores and at the Government of Navarre's Publications Fund (Calle Navas de Tolosa, 21). "El arte del Barroco en Navarra" contains the following chapters: "General aspects", "Civil, religious and ephemeral architecture", "Sculptural genres" and "Painting". The last chapter is dedicated to the sumptuary arts, with references to jewelry and silverware, engraving, ornaments, and other decorative arts.
