Thirty-two students from the subject “Seeing and Understanding Art Through the Eyes of the Prado, subject Core Curriculum taught as part Degree the Degree , traveled to Madrid on Saturday, April 18, to visit the Prado Museum and carry out the subject internship activity there, which consisted of explaining a collection of works related to medical science and healing practices.

Through the works of artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Jan Sanders van Hemessen, Bronzino, David Teniers, Theodoor Rombouts, Velázquez, Rubens, Luis Jiménez Aranda, and Luis Meléndez Pidal, the students analyzed in detail topics such as the removal of the “stone of madness,” tooth extraction and other surgical procedures, alchemy and the healing power of amulets, the clinical signs of diseases and pathologies, and medical visits and vaccination campaigns in hospitals. Prior to the trip, the students, organized into groups, had worked on classroom explanations in the classroom , thereby applying a methodology of active participation during the visit.

Alongside the exhibition , Professor Javier Azanza (School of Humanities and Social Sciences), subject manager , explained some of the masterpieces housed in the art gallery during a tour covering artists such as Rogier van der Weyden, Hieronymus Bosch, Tintoretto, El Greco, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Rubens, Rembrandt, Clara Peeters, Goya, and Sorolla.

Javier Azanza spoke very highly of the activity, both for the students’ commitment and engagement and for the opportunity to bring together two fields of knowledge art and science—which fosters a cross-disciplinary approach to works of art and leads to an extremely enriching exchange ideas. This is the third consecutive year that students in the subject the opportunity to visit the museum in Madrid.
