The School of Nursing at the University of Navarra hosted the opening of the exhibition “Caregivers, the Invisible Heart”on Monday, April 20. This initiative by the GMP Foundation pays tribute to the quiet yet essential work of caregivers. The sample be viewed in the lobby of Amigos Building features photographs and testimonials that shed light on the reality of thousands of families.

The event, held at 12:30 p.m., was attended by representatives of the GMP Foundation, the dean of the School of Nursing, Ana Choperena, and several families featured in the exhibition, whose stories are depicted in the photo displays.

During her speech, the dean emphasized the value of care as a cornerstone of society: “When we talk about caregivers, we are talking about love in action. We are talking about people who, time and again, put their own life plans on hold to ensure the dignity and well-being of others.” She also highlighted the importance of informal care as an essential complement to healthcare: “Nursing cannot and should not operate behind the backs of family caregivers. You are our indispensable partners.”

The exhibition, which is part of the 15th anniversary of the GMP Foundation, focuses on a predominantly female group. Through 40 photographs—in black and white and in color—taken by renowned photographers, the exhibition offers an intimate look at the daily lives of those who care for people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or dependency issues.

Marta Montoro, a representative of the foundation, highlighted the human aspect of project: “They are different stories, but they share a common thread: submission, presence, and a love that never gives up.” She also noted that the exhibition as a traveling exhibition with the goal continuing to raise awareness of this community in various venues.

One of the most moving moments of the event was the participation of some of the families at the center of the story, such as Miriam, David, and Álvaro. In their testimonials, they spoke about the complexity and, at the same time, the richness of the caregiving experience. “It’s hard to understand until you’ve lived through it,” they explained, noting that, despite the difficulties, caregiving also transforms people and offers a profound lesson in life and values.

The exhibition the university community and the general public to pause and reflect on the vital role of caregivers, recognizing their contribution as one of the unseen pillars of social well-being. As the dean concluded, it is about “looking with our eyes and hearts wide open” and committing to support those who care for others as well.
