Giskin Day, professor of Medical Humanities at Imperial College London, spoke about gratitude towards healthcare workers at framework of the ATLANTES and friends series, organized by the ATLANTES Program of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra.
This is a series of open online seminars in which members of group engage in dialogue with other international researchers. The initiative is part of the project 'The phenomenon of gratitude in the field of palliative care'.
In his speech, Giskin Day presented some of the projects he is working on. Firstly, he explained his study of the more than 1,500 letters of thanks between tuberculosis patients and doctors at the Brompton Hospital in London during the 20th century.
He also recounted his experience analysing the expressions of gratitude in England for the NHS health workers through social media and the applause every Thursday during confinement.
Giskin Day graduated in Botany, worked at the Science Museum in London and studied at Master's Degree in Medicine and Literature. She is interested in the relationship between science and the arts, between medicine and Humanities. As a teacher of medical students, she realised that, beyond the medical training , young people had a problem of motivation that hindered their enjoyment of the profession. She therefore decided to investigate the experience of gratitude in this field.
