Rodney N. Sullivan spoke at the University of Navarra on systematic risk and how to improve portfolio performance.

Sullivan, director Publications and publisher of the Financial Analysts Journal, explained to the students of School of Economics and Business Studies the importance in the world of financial analysis of the CFA(Chartered Financial Analysts) certification, an appropriate step for those who have thought of developing their professional career in the areas of management of assets, investment analysis and advice, and investment banking. He also discussed the perception of risk by the markets and how it has evolved during the crisis.

Rodney N. Sullivan also participated in a seminar of research for teachers, where he spoke on two papers: 'How index trading increases market vulnerability' and 'Risk-based dynamic asset allocation with extreme tails and correlation'.

On the one hand, he addressed how the growth of passive investment strategies and ETS (Exchange Traded Funds) has contributed to an increase in systematic risk, as these subject tactics lead to an increase in correlation between assets, communality, and a very similar level of exhibition . On the other hand, the speaker presented a proposal to improve portfolio performance through asset selection using market risk predictions.

Brief biography of Rodney N. Sullivan
Currently, he is chiefly responsible for the publishing house and strategic direction for a suite of publications directed towards investment professionals. He has served as publisher on several books for investment professionals and has written articles published in various scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers. He also regularly speaks before industry groups on a variety of investment management topics. Rodney is a member of the CFA Institute Investment Committee with oversight responsibility for the organization's investments.


Previously, Mr. Sullivan, filled a key leadership role as director of research and portfolio manager in the Investment Division of Trigon Healthcare, Inc. (now Anthem Insurance, Inc.). Here, he oversaw portfolio strategy and execution that included asset allocation, risk analytics, and equity and fixed-income portfolio management. As a senior portfolio analyst for Aris Corporation, Rodney oversaw manager selection and directed quantitative portfolio strategy including dynamic asset allocation and tax efficient concentrated wealth.

Mr. Sullivan is a member of the Board of Directors at the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance and a member of the Board of Advisors at Veritat Advisors. He is a member of the Chicago Quantitative Alliance and a past president of the Richmond Association for Business Economics. Mr. Sullivan is an alumnus of Virginia Commonwealth University, holding both a BS and an MA in economics, and has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University and Randolph Macon College.More information
