More than 200 students and faculty members participated in the roundtable by the Chair & LawChair School of Law University of School of Law , in collaboration with the law firm Business & Law Partners. Speakers at the event included José Mario Macías, a justice of the Constitutional Court, and María Peral, deputy editor of El Español and a journalist specializing in court coverage,
In his remarks, José Mario Macías addressed the public dimension of judicial activity and noted that “while performing their duties, judges are also judged by society as a whole.” In this context, he explained that the advertising legal proceedings is a fundamental guarantee of the rule of law, although it can create tensions when information disseminated outside the proceedings influences public opinion. The judge also referred to the difficulties posed by the adoption of measures aimed at limiting the dissemination of judicial information without affecting the right to information. In his view, any legal response to parallel trials must maintain a balance between the protection of the judicial process and respect for freedom of expression.
For her part, journalist María Peral explained how the publication of court proceedings, rulings, or other decisions can contribute to the formation of preconceived notions about cases before a trial takes place. She also noted that the digital environment and the speed at which information circulates have expanded the scope of judicial coverage, posing new challenges for both media professionals and judicial institutions.
