Miguel Bergasa: The Intimacy of a Gaze

29 | 10 | 2026

The news of Miguel Bergasa’s passing fills us with deep sadness. We have lost a photographer with a unique vision, an artist closely tied to Pamplona and Navarre, but above all, a friend. His warmth and friendliness leave an indelible mark on those of us who were fortunate enough to know him and share many moments with him.

My friendship with Miguel grew out of our connection with the University of Navarra Museum. For me, as the MUN’ director , it was a pleasure to have him as an artist and to host his “ work ” at our museum. But beyond that institutional relationship, I cherish fond memories of a person who felt at home at the museum—a place he visited frequently, with ease and enthusiasm.

One of the most significant chapters in this relationship was undoubtedly the “Mennonites of Nueva Durango” exhibition , which was on view at the MUN from October 2018 through March 2019. Some pieces from that work later became part of the Museum’s collection, thanks to a generous donation.

Last year, we had the opportunity to present the “ exhibition ” at the Alcobendas Art Center, where it was very well received by visitors and critics alike. Currently, the permanent “ conference room ” of the MUN’s photography collection sample features some of his works from the Latin American photography series.

I like to think that this body of work will continue to be a way of keeping him close, and that every time someone looks at these photographs, they will find a part of Miguel in them: his sensitivity, his keen eye for detail, and his willingness to engage with other ways of life without prejudice or fanfare.

Miguel didn't come to the museum just because his * work* was on display here. He also came as a visitor, driven by a genuine passion for photography. He enjoyed our collection and the exhibitions we organize, and his presence was a source of joy for us.

Those of us who knew him will also remember his demeanor, his kind attention , his willingness to meeting , and that warmth that made conversation so easy. His approachability was not a mere aspect of his personality, but rather a way of relating to others that also reflected his understanding of photography: with attention and sensitivity toward whatever and whoever was in front of him.

Today, we are left with the comfort of his work, which will continue to speak to us, and with gratitude for having crossed paths with him. On behalf of the University of Navarra Museum—and also as a friend—I would like to express my love to his family and to all those who loved him.

Thank you, Miguel, for your perspective, for your friendship, and for the many moments we shared. The Museum will continue to be a place where we can meet you. And we will continue to remember you with the affection you deserve.
