Idoia Pardavila has defended the first thesis of doctoral program at Nursing Science by the University of Navarra. Her work proposes a smoking cessation program, specifically designed for university students and carried out by a nurse, which increases the success rate of withdrawal by 221%.

A total of 255 university student smokers participated in this study. The intervention consisted of a program combining different strategies of Education for health adapted to the characteristics of the university population and carried out by a nursing professional. During six months, the participants underwent a motivational interview; follow-up sessions to prevent relapse and increase social support during the smoking cessation process; as well as personalized self-help material available on line.

Considering that behavior is influenced by personal, social and environmental aspects, Pardavila states that"smoking cessation programs should be designed specifically for each group population. Therefore, the positive results of work suggest that this program could also be effective, once adapted to their characteristics, in adolescents and adults".

The thesis , entitled"Effectiveness of a smoking cessation program for university students.
