Service-learning: from Pamplona to Kenya

A work fin de Degree from the University's School of Architecture promotes the construction of a school in Kenya.

Last September 28th, a new seminar of Civic Parliamentdegree scroll "Service-Learning in the final projects of Degree: design of project Building their future: reconstruction of a school in Kenya".

In it, professors from the University of Navarra, architects Efrén Munárriz and Conrado Capilla, spoke about the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra, architects Efrén Munárriz and Conrado Capilla, talked about the project end of Degree of the student Clara Purroy, who developed a work that proposed the construction of a school in Kenya, and that has been carried out in a first phase, thanks to work of up to 60 volunteers (less than half architects), mobilized by Tantaka and teachers who went to the country this summer.

"This subject of works have a clear innovative component in the way of teaching, they require adaptation by the academic staff, since the student is the real protagonist of learning," said Capilla, who added that there is a clear social component, community, in this subject of teaching, "it is important to think and generate projects that are service". He also stressed the satisfaction on the part of academic staff to see and analyze the work done "we are very proud that in this case, students have flown above us, their expectations and ambitions have been very high".

Professor Munárriz explained the procedure and the different phases of the construction: on the one hand, the phase developed in Pamplona, with the construction of the prototype of a module on the esplanade of the School of Architecture; and the phase that took place in Kenya, throughout the summer. "It is interesting to see how the students are learning in the process. In addition, they are beginning to see leadership, organization and management team building. The construction of the school has meant much more than the construction of something material; it is an integral management , where relationships are also built".

Regarding the expansion of project, to its future, Munárriz said that "it is an open process, the intention is to continue building, there is work for three, four or five more years. The director dreams of building even a boarding school", and added, "this project has had a germ, which has the name of Clara Purroy, but the dream is to grow, for others to take over, so that the spirit of Building their future will continue to live on". 

Seminars organized by the GIEC

This session, organized by GIEC, group of research at Education, Citizenship and Character, is part of the national project funded by the MEC (2014-2017): Service-Learning and Innovation at the University. A program for the improvement of students' academic performance and social capital. A project in which researchers from 5 other Spanish universities participate: Universities of Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Complutense de Madrid, Córdoba and Valencia, in addition to the University of Navarra.

Since 2010 until today, the GIEC has been developing the project of research Parlamento Cívico, at partnership with the Parliament of Navarra. Among its purposes, this project seeks promote civic participation as a fundamental element of democratic coexistence. To this end, in recent years the Civic Parliament has also addressed the interest in the service-learning methodology and its performance in the civic Education and the development of social virtues.
