220 students make up the first class of the new Degree in Medicine

The students, from 14 countries and more than 100 cities, begin a course marked by the complete renovation of Study program, new teaching methodologies and assessment, and the reinforcement of practical classes.

220 students start their programs of study in the School of Medicine, in a course characterized by a change of the Study program that is adapted to the international standards of the World Federation for Medical Education, and that has been designed in partnership with academic staff of Harvard Medical School.

For Gabriel Pérez, the commitment of the School to this integrated curriculum was a factor core topic to move from Malaga to the University: "I believe that, despite the current circumstances, the new Study program, together with the greater volume of practices, both clinical and research, will train us and prepare us much better for the future that awaits us as doctors", he explains.

The new students come from 14 different countries such as Dubai, Germany, China or Canada, and more than 100 Spanish cities. Of these, 90 have decided to take the International Program in Medicine, a program that will offer them a global vision, and will allow them to develop their professional degree program in any country in Europe and the world. This is the case of Belén García, who arrives in Pamplona from Madrid: "My goal after finishing the degree program is to be able to do the specialization in the United States. After having lived in San Francisco, I was very clear, when I returned in 2017, that I wanted to train at a university that would give me access to international hospitals, and thus access the best possible training as a professional and as a person," she confesses.

Medicine, a vital challenge

"With your election you have decided to live in a different way, focused on serving others and, in a special way, those who suffer the most," Dr. Secundino Fernandez, Dean of the School, reminded them in his welcome. challenge "That is why today you are beginning a long-distance degree program that will be a permanent challenge for you intellectually, physically, emotionally and emotionally staff. But all of us are here to help you on this exciting path".

In addition, Dean stressed the importance of starting to shape the doctor they want to be in the future: "The Degree is six years that go by very quickly and the future, to a large extent, is built by us. So think carefully about what you want your answer to be when you are asked in a few years' time what you were doing during the pandemic of 2020. Today you are starting to become healthcare professionals.

Learning styles and methodologies 3.0

On their first day as undergraduates, the School prepared a workshop -Introduction to Medical Profession- in which different professors addressed some issues core topic facing the new course such as the instructions of the new integrated curriculum or the overview of first.

In addition, Dr. Leire Arbea, director of the Medical Education Unit, guided them to discover what their learning style is staff in order to get the most out of each subject. "We don't want you to be passive subjects, we want you to be the real protagonists when it comes to learning. That is why we have combined different methodologies to make your learning much more meaningful and profound".
