Five years of research have culminated in this study -directed by Professor Fernando López Pan-on the staff career and the work as columnist-article writer of the director of Diario de Navarra between 1962 and 1990. In its first part, the work collects the highlights of Uranga's life; his programs of study of Philosophy and Letters in Zaragoza and Journalism in Madrid, his arrival at the newspaper in 1953, his appointment as director in 1962, the attack he suffered in 1980, and the subsequent years at the head of the newspaper until 1990 and as a columnist until 2015. The research has been carried out in the framework of the project 'Public discourse' of the Institute for Culture and Society of the University of Navarra.

Uranga has maintained a close relationship with the University of Navarra. He collaborated as a publisher with the magazine Nuestro Tiempo between 1957 and 1968 and taught subjects related to literature and journalistic essay at the Institute of Journalism (later School) from 1958 to 1972. In 2003 the School of Communication presented him with the Brajnovicaward .

In his last years in active service he received other awards, such as the Union of Journalists of Spain ( 1981), the Golden Pen of Freedom of the Press (1981), the Calvo Serer of the Diario Madrid Foundation ( 2002) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Navarre ( 2011).

In addition to Uranga's life, the thesis analyzes -with a model elaborated by the PhD studentthe thematic interests and the style of the 2,535 articles published in the section Desd'el Gallo de San Cernin between 1953 and 2015. Among the former, it includes his political columnism -in which he defends a foral Navarre in continuity with the old Kingdom- and a good issue of costumbrista articles. According to one of the conclusions of the thesis , Uranga's style(Ollarra, in his articles), stands out for its emotionality, precision, humor and closeness to the reader; after literary beginnings, his style became more sober as the weight of his political articles increased.

Uranga has also stood out in the defense of freedoms; during the final years of Francoism, trying to gain room for maneuver for the press, through the launching of Colpisa (1972) and other actions that led to the opening of four administrative proceedings; later, suffering in his own person the violence of ETA, in an attack in which -on August 22, 1980- he was shot more than 20 times.

The thesis concludes that he is surely the most widely read journalist in the Navarrese press, due to the issue of his writings and the penetration of the media in which he has always worked. For his drive as director of the newspaper and his intervention, together with the political class , in the public life of Navarre, he is one of the most influential people in the recent history of the region, particularly during the years of the Transition.

The defense was attended by the children and other relatives of José Javier Uranga, as well as by the heads of Diario de Navarra: its current director, Inés Artajo, her predecessor, Julio Martínez Torres, and the current president of the committee of directors of the group La Información S.A., publisher of the newspaper, Virgilio Sagüés. In addition to people related to the PhD student, the former regional president Juan Cruz Alli and Víctor Manuel Arbeloa, former president of the parliament of Navarre, were present; both are mentioned in the thesis .
