The University of Navarra's Schools of Science and Economics and Business Administration have organized a free online course to raise awareness among the general public of the importance of caring for the natural environment. Under the degree scroll "Understanding the Environment" the course also aims to highlight the interaction of human beings with their environment.

"There is a fundamental need for people to conceive of the environment as a pillar of sustainability, and for this they must know the ecosystems and the challenges that affect them. With this course we intend to contribute to accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable society from an environmental, economic and social perspective", says Enrique Baquero, professor at School of Sciences.

In this course, eight landscapes -arid, tropical, Atlantic, Mediterranean, urban, alpine, coastal and fluvial- are approached from different perspectives, to give the student tools to interpret the environment that surrounds us, and increase awareness of the need to take care of it. "In the presentation of the landscapes, the student is taken to see the relationship of people with the environment, also mentioning some problems or situations that allow us to understand the interaction between nature and human beings," adds Baquero.

The course, which lasts approximately 75 hours, will start in October and will be available at available during the present academic year. The methodology consists of watching videos of the different landscapes, and interaction in each of these scenarios through complementary material to end with a self-assessment. "This training is aimed at all audiences, without requiring a previous training in science. It can be taken on demand, whenever you want, thanks to the online methodology," concludes Baquero.

The course is part of the University of Navarra 's sustainability plan, and in the future it is intended to undertake new courses to address the social, environmental and economic challenges present in society.
