On May 20, the University of Navarra presented the new Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBIO), at staff of the campus in Pamplona and San Sebastian.

The Vice President of research of the University of Navarra, Iciar Astiasarán, addressed all the attendees via videoconference from the Clinic, accompanied by the researchers who will participate from the campus biosanitary of Pamplona, to make a brief introduction about the Philosophy and the way in which they will work in the CBIO.

The scientific coordination of the new Center will be shared between Dr. Manuel Manrique, consultant of department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Clinic and Dr. Ángel Rubio, director of department of Biomedical Engineering of the Clinic. CEIT. Dr. Manrique addressed the audience, highlighting the fundamental characteristics of the mission statement of the new Center and underlined the potential of "the combination of the knowledge and the biomedical capabilities of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra with the technological innovation of the Center of programs of study and Technical Research (CEIT) and the School of Engineers -TECNUN". Next, Dr. Ángel Rubio, from the campus in San Sebastián, explained the different funding channels that are being used for research projects.

In addition, during the event, the new web page that has been created to disseminate the Center's capabilities was presented . www.unav.edu/cbio

goal of the CBIO

The University of Navarra has launched the Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBIO) with the goal to develop, in partnership with the business network and together with the Schools and centers of the University of Navarra related to life sciences, new solutions for clinical needs, with a clear reference: to provide improvements for health.

This center combines the knowledge and the biomedical capabilities of the Clinic with the technological capabilities of the Center of programs of study and Technical Research (CEIT) and the School of Engineers (TECNUN) to offer solutions to the health technology and pharmaceutical sectors. The CBIO is consolidated as one of the main lines of research together with the Nutrition Center, the high school of Culture and Society (ICS), the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) and the high school of Tropical Health (ISTUN).

Funding for research projects comes from the University's own funds, from companies and from competitive public programs (regional, national and European governments).

partnership with the industry

The Center for Biomedical Engineering currently has a team multidisciplinary of researchers with a high Degree of specialization and experience, who in addition to developing solutions to needs arising in the clinical setting, work on projects tailored to the interests of companies belonging to the health sector. The CBIO offers to the business network its capacity of development of technology oriented to the generation of innovative products of high value for the industry and services of research related to its areas of activity (nano and microtechnologies, biorobotics, planning software and surgical simulation or computational biology).

Some examples of the lines of research of the Center are the following: administration of drugs using nanotechnology; development of new micro-laboratories for better diagnosis of diseases (providing precision, speed, anticipation and ease of use); robotic technology to facilitate minimally invasive surgery (which reduces risks, patient recovery times and associated costs) and finally, the finding of new drug indications based, among others, on the information provided by the human genome.

The center also conducts research into therapeutic improvements, the search for disease biomarkers and the promotion of telemedicine, which will make it possible to provide remote care for patients, improving their follow-up and care, while reducing the inconvenience of travel.

The CBIO's management body is made up of two scientific coordinators, Prof. Dr. Manuel Manrique, from the Clinic, and Dr. Ángel Rubio, from TECNUN; and the general coordinator Gustavo Pego.
