Students from Andalusia, Catalonia and Extremadura win the final of a statistics competition for undergraduates held in Pamplona

90 students from all over Spain have entered the IX national phase of the 'Incubadora de Sondeos y Experimentos' Contest, co-organized by the Institute for Culture and Society

Students from Andalusia, Catalonia and Extremadura have result winners of the IX national phase of the Contest 'Incubator of Probes and Experiments' held on July 2 and 3 in Pamplona. This competition seeks to awaken in student body of Education Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), high school diploma and training Professional (FP) the curiosity for statistics as a basic tool for research.

It has been organized by the Unit of Science of data of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra and the department of Statistics, Informatics and Mathematics of the Public University of Navarra (UPNA). In addition, it has been funded by the Institute of Statistics of Navarra (Nastat), the department of Education of the Government of Navarra and the Society of Statistics and research Operative (SEIO), and the partnership of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the City Council of Pamplona.

The participants presented several projects on statistics, probability and research on a topic of their choice (society, health, ecology, environment, Economics, consumption...).

Travel, health and climate

In the category of 1st and 2nd year of ESO, the winner was the representative of Catalonia, Jordi López López from high school Escola Pía Sarrià-Calassanç (Barcelona), who was tutored by Marta Mallafré. He presented the work graduate 'Traveling is the only thing you buy and it makes you richer'.

In the category of 3rd and 4th year of ESO, the winner was Martín Manuel Ruiz Onetti, representative of Andalusia, with the work 'Do we take care of our brain health?'. His tutor was Antonia Alcantarilla Santos, teacher at high school María Auxiliadora de Écija (Seville).

In the category of high school diploma and FP cycles, the award was won by the team from Extremadura for their work 'Detectives climáticos'. Its authors were María Barriga Romero, Ángel Luis Gallego Rodríguez, Samuel Gamero Guzmán, María Martín Borrego and Carlos Zambrano Sánchez together with their tutor Carmen Espejo Ibáñez, from IES Virgen de Soterraño de Barcarrota (Badajoz).

In addition, in the category of 3rd and 4th of ESO, the jury awarded a accredited specialization to the team from Cantabria, for their work 'Menudo numerito es el 23'. Its authors were Zoe Fuentes Simón, Lucas Laso Gutiérrez, Diego Ortiz San Emeterio and Jesús Prieto Ortiz, students of the IES Lope de Vega de Santa María de Cayón, under the direction of teacher César Llata Peña.

Spain's best students meet in Pamplona

In total, ninety students of ESO, high school diploma and FP from all over Spain (among them, nine representatives of the Comunidad Foral) have participated in this final phase, held at campus of Arrosadia, in Pamplona, of the UPNA. These students had result winners of the different local phases of the competition, held throughout this academic year in the different autonomous communities. Specifically, the Navarre phase was held on June 17 at the ICS of the University of Navarra, where students from IES Benjamín de Tudela, San Cernin and Calasanz qualified for this final.

The closing ceremony of this meeting was attended by Jesús López-Fidalgo, director of the Science Unit of data of the ICS and incoming president of the Society of Statistics and Operational research (SEIO); José Antonio Moler Cuiral and María José Asiáin Ollo, professors of department of Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics of the UPNA. The other organizers of the above-mentioned department of the academic institution of Navarre were Ana Burusco Juandeaburre, Camino Leránoz Istúriz, Blanca Palacios Navarro and Henar Urmeneta Martín-Calero.
