The use of the written language influences the choice of a possible quotation in online dating applications. This is one of the preliminary conclusions of a study carried out by Esther Linares Bernabéu, a researcher from the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) at the University of Navarra, and María del Carmen Méndez Santos, professor at area of Linguistics at the University of Alicante.

The experts are conducting an academic and pragmatic analysis of interactions and conversations on Tinder, an app they have chosen because it is the most popular among young people. Through it, the person interested in having a first contact with another has to choose and discard candidates until there is a "match", i.e., a coincidence of tastes between the two.

At the moment they have 256 samples and invite people who wish to collaborate through anonline questionnaire , in order to collect as many as possible of data.

Drs. Linares and Méndez noted that women attach more importance to verbal expression. Eighty-two percent of them penalize the fact that a candidate writes with spelling mistakes, compared to 42.2% of men.

They have also concluded that the adjectives that women prefer to see in the description of men are, in order of preference: funny, nice, sincere, manager, respectful, polite and spontaneous. In the case of men, they like women who are considered fun, friendly, spontaneous and, at the same level, extroverted, adventurous and sporty.

In addition, they have detected that girls are not attracted to those who start their conversations with a generic "Hi, beautiful", as they prefer to be called by name or to make some allusion more staff with data that appear on their profile. Something similar happens with boys, who select more those potential partners who show proactivity and do not limit themselves to greetings when they wish to engage in a first contact.

"During the pandemic, as a consequence of social isolation, life has been virtualized, it has affected leisure and couple relationships and the use of this subject of applications has increased", pointed out María del Carmen Méndez.
