"With the doctorate, the University gives you submission the highest Degree that it can grant. It includes you among the issue of its doctors, not by degree scroll of honor, but of merit. With the investiture, you also receive a degree scroll of responsibility, because in some way you become part of the group of teachers and you assume the commitment to transmit what you have learned to the young students who each year fill the university classrooms", said President Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero, at the investiture ceremony of the 152 new doctors of the University of Navarra. They come from 18 different countries.

During his speech at classroom Magna, Professor Sánchez-Tabernero reflected on the transforming influence that assuming responsibility for others implies: "As President of the University of Navarra, I dare to ask you to courageously assume the responsibility of being authentic teachers who seek the truth and the transmission of the university ideal".

He also referred to the need to be well prepared: "From now on you must continue to dedicate time - daily, I would dare say - to the slow and deep study of your respective disciplines, which will allow you to become prestigious references in your subject. The training and wisdom are not improvised: they require time and patience".

He also encouraged them to face their new challenges: "Our society demands the leadership and generosity of new teachers. In the face of this status, I dare to ask you not to make a pact with mediocrity. Practice a healthy nonconformism, which, without arrogance or unnecessary urgency, but also without giving up your own principles, will keep you faithful to your condition as university students.

Enthusiasm and social responsibility behind the doctorate

The godmother of the graduating class, Professor Cristina García-Vivar, from the School of Nursing, indicated that "the thesis is not a point of arrival, it is the rocket that launches the acquired capacity to discover new knowledge, using a rigorous method. The launching of the rocket, metaphorically speaking, has result possible because perhaps, without realizing it, you have brought into play a series of moral virtues that have necessarily accompanied your intellectual virtues".                                  

On the other hand, Dulce Redín Goñi, from the School of Economics, who has pronounced the speech of gratitude on behalf of the new promotion of doctors, encouraged her colleagues in this new stage: "I want to invite each other to persevere in the virtues of the Degree that we receive today, seeking excellence and the highest goals in our work, without losing any of the illusion with which we began our academic training ".

In total, from June 2013 to June 2014, 152 researchers have defended their thesis , belonging to 15 Schools, schools and institutes: 24 belong to the School of Sciences; 42 to Engineers; 12 to Philosophy and Letters; 8 to Education and Psychology; 23 to Medicine; 9 to Pharmacy; 5 to Theology; 5 to Communication; 3 to business and Humanism; 5 to Law; 4 to Architecture; 1 to Ecclesiastical of Philosophy; 4 to Economics; 7 to IESE; and 1 to Canon Law.
