"I'm very nurturing and had been wanting to help for some time."

The "Eskutik" initiative is aimed at children under 12 years of age, cared for by the child protection services of department of Social Policy of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and residing in residential resources of the administration.

One year ago, Ana signed up as a volunteer for Tantaka. She read the interview by Tecnun professor Javi Díaz, in which she recounts her experience accompanying a child living in a center run by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, and decided to take the plunge, knowing that if she did it, it had to be "seriously because you can't play with a child's feelings".

She has always been a great babysitter and now that her children are older, she thought the time had come. "From the first day, I had a very good connection with her," says Ana, referring to the 8-year-old girl she accompanies, every Wednesday, on the framework of the project Eskutik of the Red Cross Gipuzkoa. "At first I was a bit apprehensive because of the age difference. Her mother is much younger and she has four more siblings, but she has adjusted very well and we are doing great".

In the summer, she says that she was "allowed" to make more plans with her, and her two children and husband joined her. "There is a lot of monitoring by the tutors and social educators of the apartment and rules to follow, logically. But once there is already that trust, if you can't go one day, or you prefer to take her on the weekend to the Aquarium, for example, there is no problem," she continues. "Something I've learned, and which I've been insisted on a lot from the apartment, is that it's not about them seeing you as a buyer, but as someone who is going to be with them, to spend time with them.

"As soon as I arrive he is downstairs or looking out the window. I see that he is comfortable and the educators tell me that he asks how much time is left for him to come. They are children with a very difficult status . They suffer a lot and they show it by being more disobedient, calling for your attention in a store...What they need is affection."
