Ethnography, the study of people and cultures, does not only take into account personal experiences: it also observes the phenomenon under investigation. These observations make it possible to see behaviors in the context in which they take place, as well as to understand the perspectives of the participants.

Ethnography has been the focus of the annual course of research qualitative of the ATLANTES Program of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) in its 2018 edition. The qualitative research allows to approach reality taking into account the current perspectives of people, who are necessary actors in the events that shape a reality, and to focus the analysis on them.

According to the course organizers, the context in which people live and the meaning they give to their experiences influence how they behave and, specifically, how they experience health and disease processes. They add that, from these premises, the qualitative research can be of great value for professionals who develop their work in different contexts.

This can be applied to Education, psychology, journalism, management, health... From the ATLANTES Program they emphasize that for this work, focused ethnography has an important role in the research that is developed considering the influence of culture to propose culturally appropriate initiatives and solutions.

The course was given by Carole Robinson, professor at School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia -campus Okanagan (Canada), Olga López de Dicastillo, professor at School of Nursing at the University of Navarra; and María Arantzamendi and Carla Reigada, researchers of the ATLANTES Program of the ICS.

Professionals from institutions such as Chair WeCare of the International University of Catalonia, the Hospital de Manacor, 4DHealth Innovation Simulation Center, Hospital San Juan de Dios, the Public University of Navarra and various centers of the University of Navarra have attended.

The ATLANTES Program at Institute for Culture and Society is supported by Banco Santander at framework through a agreement signed with the University of Navarra.
