Jesús López Fidalgo, Full Professor at the University of Navarra, has been appointed president of the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations research (SEIO). At the academic center, the professor directs the Science Unit of data of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) and the Master's Degree University in Big Data Science.

Jesús López Fidalgo has made extended stays of research and teaching at the universities of Manchester, Glasgow, California (Los Angeles and Riverside) and Alberta. He is also an elected member of high school International Statistics. He has been manager of the National Mathematics Plan at the Ministry of Science and Innovation (2009-2011), professor at the University of Salamanca and director of the School of Industrial Engineering of the University of Castilla La Mancha (2008-2016), an academic center from which he is on leave of absence.

He has published more than 100 articles in scientific journals and has written several books, including El azar no existe, from knowledge dissemination. He has directed thirteen doctoral thesis and coordinates a node of the network national Biostatistics.

Science of the data and Big Data

The SEIO has as goal the development, improvement and promotion of the methods and applications of Statistics and Operational research . Among its members there are academics and researchers in these areas, as well as professionals in the field of data and Big Data science and public statistics represented in its institutes. 

According to Professor López Fidalgo, his fundamental challenge as president is the positioning of the SEIO in the world of the Science of the data and the treatment of Big Data. He emphasizes that the Society is an institutional member of the European Federation of Statistical Societies and of the International Statistical high school , as well as of the National Commission of Mathematics. It is also a member of the international and European associations of research Operational , among others.

The most outstanding activity of the SEIO is a national congress which is held every year and a half, with the participation of between 350 and 400 professionals, many of them researchers. In this framework are also held the conference of Public Statistics, which is coordinated by the high school National Statistics Office, and joint sessions are organized with other Spanish and international societies, as well as with the Army, which is partner institutional. It also publishes two indexed journals: TEST and TOP, distributed by SpringerVerlag.
