Students from 16 universities take part in an interactive surgery course at the University of Navarra conference

The event includes the broadcasting of live surgeries and workshops on clinical simulation of childbirth or extraction of patients from a crashed vehicle, among others.

Medical students from all over Spain are quotation these days at the University of Navarra to participate in the conference Interactive Surgery for Students (JOICE).

The activity, which has attracted nearly 350 participants, includes for the first time the broadcasting of live surgeries from the Clínica Universidad de NavarraThe event, which has brought together nearly 350 participants, includes for the first time the broadcasting of surgeries live from the Internet, several keynote lectures and almost twenty practical workshops such as "Basic and Vascular Suture", "Medtronic Laparoscopic Surgery" and even the clinical simulation of a birth and the extraction of patients from an accident vehicle at partnership with the Firefighters of Navarra. 

Dean The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Alberto Lafuente, vice-president of the high school de Médicos de Navarra; Dr. Secundino Fernández, vice-president of the School de Medicina de la Universidad de Navarra; Dr. Fernando Martínez Regueira, physician manager of JOICE; Dr. Jesús Barrio, from the department de Oftalmología of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra; and Ramón Vera, president of the conference.

Later, Lieutenant Colonel Laguardia, who spoke on "Surgery and military operations abroad", took place discussion paper . In it, he delved into the objectives of military healthcare and the importance of damage control surgery as well as treating catastrophic bleeding. "50% of avoidable deaths are caused by hemorrhage and 7% of all avoidable deaths would have been solved with a tourniquet," explained the military man who referred to his experience as a military doctor in Afghanistan.

A program by and for future surgeons

The conference, attended by students from sixteen universities from all over Spain, will continue throughout the 10th with different workshops and live surgeries until the 11th, when conferences will be held by Dr. Pedro Cavadas, author of the first face transplant in our country; and Dr. Diego Gonzalez Rivas, who is credited with the development of the Uniportal VATS technique that allows the removal of lung tumors with a single incision. There will also be presentations by several students and the projection of the film "7 days 7 cities".

The JOICE are conference organized exclusively for university students and resident physicians, whose aim is to goal expand the surgical knowledge of medical students in an interactive way..
