More than 60 people gathered at IESE' s New York campus for attend for a conversation between cardiologist Valentín Fuster, of Mount Sinai Hospital, and the academic center's President , Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero, on the future of Education and research.

The President presented to the alumni and other people attending the event the project of the University for the coming years and recalled that the institution "was born with a dream - with passion for a mission statement - which has made it possible to achieve the impossible" .

In this regard, he referred to the growth of international outreach, the strengthening of the research centers and the opening of a new campus in Madrid. "We are becoming more and more international. At the moment, almost 25% of our graduates come from other countries," he stressed. According to Professor Sánchez-Tabernero, "the international outreach is the 'test absorbent cotton' of quality."

However, he stressed that "to be international it is necessary to have roots" and the roots of the University of Navarra are in Navarra. "Only if you have roots can you grow and go abroad, and in turn, that international outreach has repercussions on development and in a service to the society where you were born."

The President also made reference letter, among other initiatives, to the Museum, which celebrates its third anniversary, to the Office of Entrepreneurship, which finances business ideas to generate employment, and to the Office of development, which obtains resources for scholarships and research. "All these projects, whose goal is to make the University of Navarra the best place to study and a place where high-quality science is produced," he said, "are only possible if we have the support of the alumni".

Advancement of science and humanism

The President underlined the impact of the interdisciplinary research and teaching in the advancement of science and said that "a clear field" is technology in the service of health.

For his part, cardiologist Valentín Fuster stressed theimportance of "recovering human values", since the advances that have been made in medicine do not go hand in hand with the humanism needed in the medical field: "Technical and humanistic integration is an obligation" in the healthcare sector, he said.

In his opinion, these values "can be transmitted from the bottom up", from the teaching transmitted at university. challenge With regard to the advance of technology, the cardiologist considers that "we are aging thanks to technology, but the big question is how to reeducate people after a certain age, either to continue working at the same job or to change jobs, because in the near future there will be more people over 65 years of age than under 65 years of age".
