Arturo Gullón Macarrón, one of the pioneers of the School of Science, has passed away

Born in Ecija (Seville) in 1928, he graduated in Medicine from the University of Seville and in Odontology and Stomatology from the Complutense University of Madrid. He extended his programs of study in Germany with a prestigious scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and carried out his teaching and research at different universities.

Arturo joined the School of Science in 1963—when Álvaro del Amowas Deanwhere she taught General Biology, Genetics doctorate courses doctorate Genetics . She served as director programs of study director department Genetics, and spearheaded the growth of the Faculty. In 1975, she was appointed Chair Genetics the University of La Laguna, where she also worked as professor researcher. She later returned to the University.

One of the lines of research in which Professor Gullón was a specialist and made important contributions was the study of genetic mutations. In addition, he published several works such as Introducción a la Genetics de eucariotas and a guide on Applied Statistics and Biostatistics, in partnership with María José Calasanz and Marta García Granero.

María José Calasanz, a professor at the School of Science a student of Arturo’s, highlights the“enormous generosity and trust” he showed in her from the very beginning of her degree program . “He was a great mentor. I will remember him fondly.”

For his part, Luis Herrera, Full Professor at the School of Science, highlights his generosity, kindness, and good sense of humor: “Arturo was a generous and kind man, diligent in fulfilling all his administrative duties at the Faculty as director programs of study department director , showing attention and thoughtful attention toward all faculty members faculty professor staff , and always surrounded by a handful of students to whom he devoted immeasurable time for their training preparation.”
