The European Commission has awarded a“Starting Grant” scholarship to Daniel Reta, former student Degree Chemistry at the School of Science. This grant will allow Daniel to launch an independent degree program (form his own work team work develop his own lines of research) over the course of five years, with total funding of 1.5 million euros. The project Reta is working project is called RadicalProtON, and he will carry it out at the Faculty of Chemistry the University of the Basque Country in San Sebastián.

Daniel is very happy about this achievement, mainly because this award validates his scientific ideas, although he is aware that the next few years will be long work: "This scholarship, apart from having a large amount of money associated with it, positions you in the scientific field. Even so, it is still a "Starting" scholarship , so, despite having reached this point, there is still a lot to do", he points out.

Reta's research is fundamental science. RadicalProtON proposes to design and characterize organic molecules capable of sacrificing one subject of link chemical to accommodate two unpaired electrons. According to researcher , this project has two main lines: "the first consists of defining what ingredients are necessary for a molecule to become radical; the second proposes to use this knowledge to better understand the mechanism of action of certain drugs".

Daniel recognizes that he has always had a certain interest in science and that "studying Chemistry was a very wise decision". From his time at the University he remembers the teachings of professors Iker Zuriguel, Ángel Garcimartín and Diego Maza, and he values very positively his erasmus in Lille.

The Pamplona native is sample very satisfied with his professional career so far and looks to the future with optimism: "If all goes well, my scientific future would consist of establishing the innovative ideas of my project RadicalProtON and developing new lines of research in the field of molecular magnetism," he concludes.
