"In the development of Science it is essential to have technical means, but it is much more important to have motivated people who make its progress possible. This is precisely the role of the universities: to train, awaken and encourage the scientific vocation of our students". This was stated today by Ángel J. Gómez-Montoro, President of the University of Navarra, on the occasion of the opening of the Science, Technology and Innovation Weeks 2009, which took place today at the academic center.

The President of the Government of Navarre, Miguel Sanz, and the Regional Minister for Innovation, business and employment, José María Roig, also took part in the event, which was held at School de Ciencias. According to the president of the regional executive, the universities "constitute an element core topic for the economic and social development of Navarre". He also recalled that the region "is at the forefront in investment in research and development+I, 1.98% of our GDP, only behind the Community of Madrid".

The Dean of the School of Sciences, for his part, thanked the support of the authorities for these conference of knowledge dissemination of science, "whose goal fundamental consists of bringing closer to society the activities that are carried out in the universities and centers of research, oriented to serve more and better to all citizens".

The 2009 Science Weeks will be held from November 16 to 24. During the event, the University of Navarra will offer six conferences to position by specialists on topics of interest, such as experiments in microgravity or the use of micro-medicines to fight against micro-organisms. In addition, the prizes for the Science and Nature Photography Contest will be awarded, and School of Pharmacy will present the 2010 edition of Nutrivídeo.
