Winners of the first edition of the School Contest research in Science

The School of Sciences organized this competition in which more than 140 students from all over Spain participated.

The works"Steam distillation: design Equipment and obtaining basil essence" (by Rubén Gañán, Mario San Nicolás and Adriá Sánchez, students of high school Xaloc-Hospitalet de Llobegrat) and "Pollution study of the Manzanares river along the Community of Madrid" (by Javier Reyzábal, Juan Sainz and Carlos Sánchez, students of Retamar de Madrid) have won the first edition of the School Contest in Science-sciRESEARCH at the University of Madrid, result Juan Sainz and Carlos Sánchez, students of high school Retamar de Madrid) have won the first edition of the School Contest research in Science-sciRESEARCH of the University of Navarra, in the categories of Chemistry and Biology, respectively. In the competition, 143 students of third and fourth year of E.S.O. from all over Spain have participated and 16 works have been evaluated by a jury formed by professors and researchers of the School of Sciences.

Likewise, special mentions were awarded for Chemistry to the research"Comparative analysis of the efficacy of antacids" by Guadalupe Arevalo, Loreto de la Chica, Virginia Rubio and Patricia Moreno-Manzanaro from high school Fuenllana of Madrid;"Aguas de Calidad en un entorno natural", by Ignacio Sandoval, Daniel Bullido and Víctor Haro from high school Tajamar de Madrid; and"Producción de biodiesel a partir del cultivo de microalgas" by Miguel Rivas, Alejandro Millán and Guillermo Valeiras from high school Montecastelo de Vigo.

In the Biology category, the following were recognized: programs of study "¿De qué dependen los sueños?" by Ignacio Ariño, Juan Antonio Gil, Javier Masoliver also from high school Retamar de Madrid; and"¿Es inteligente un periquito?" by Nicolás Acevedo, Bernardo Merino, Manuel Liaño from high school Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas-Madrid.

"The goal of this award was to value Science as a vehicle for human progress, to promote scientific vocations among schoolchildren and, at the same time, to promote the values of the scientific research as the effort and the work in team, etc.", said the director of development of the School, Borja Mora-Figueroa. "The winning works and those that have received accredited specialization from the Jury are of extraordinary quality and demonstrate that science can be understood and explained from an early age, in an attractive and simple way".

The submission awards ceremony will take place on April 24 at the University of Navarra, where the winners and special mentions will have the opportunity to present their projects to the rest of the participants and to academic staff of the center.
