The University of Navarra has announced its decision to maintain the presentation of the resource of appeal and to use all the legal means at its disposal, because it considers that with the new call for scholarship applications of the Government of Navarra "hundreds of families from Navarra with less resources are being unfairly harmed". This was stated today by the Vice President of Students, Tomás Gómez-Acebo in an informative session with affected Navarre students and their families.

The session was attended by a large number of students and also by some parents, in status difficult economic situation, or unemployed, who expressed their concern about the danger of having to abandon the programs of study started.

Tomás Gómez-Acebo pointed out that the call for applications "has two important limitations: one of form, since it has been published very late and does not allow time to fulfill some of the requirements requirements; and another of substance, which consists in the reduction of the amounts for many students of the University of Navarra from low-income families". It is estimated that from average, the decrease for scholarship is one third of the amount, and this for many students "will be a serious problem".

In total, of the 1,000 Navarre students at the University of Navarra who applied for the scholarship, 540 students received this financial aid last year. Of these, two thirds belonged to families with the lowest incomes and most of them are studying degrees that cannot be taken at the Public University. The call for applications has increased the income allowed to request the scholarship, which will result in "higher income families receiving the financial aid , but will decrease the financial aid to families with fewer resources", according to the Vice President of Students.

Tomás Gómez-Acebo insisted that this is not a conflict between universities, nor a conflict between the University and the Government, "but between the Government and the affected families".

Likewise, the Vice President highlighted that in Navarra students have a wide and quality offer of programs of study that they can study without going to other cities, with all that this implies, also economically. "The call seriously worsens the status of the people who most financial aid need. Those who have resources will continue to choose freely. The rest will find it difficult to study the degree program they want," stressed Gómez-Acebo.

Finally, Gómez-Acebo recalled that the University of Navarra awards or obtains 22 million euros in scholarships and grants each year, directly and through different companies and entities.
