The University of Navarra submission awards the prizes for the 2009 Science and Nature photography contest.
The School of Sciences of the University of Navarra awarded the prizes of the Science and Nature 2009 photography contest. The first prize, award , went to Izaskun Valdivieso, for her work "Light in Solid"; and the second prize, to Javier Yárnoz Sánchez, for an image entitled "Afternoon". Likewise, Diego González Iglesias, a student of high school diplomareceived the special award to the knowledge dissemination Científica, with the photograph "Fusión".
The award ceremony took place on the occasion of the celebration of the patron saint of the School of Sciences, Saint Albert the Great, and was part of the events of the Science, Technology and Innovation Weeks 2009. After the submission awards, the Full Professor of Microbiology César Nombela gave a speech lecture on "Biology and Biotechnology: half a century of scientific advances in an ethical perspective".
This competition has as goal to bring science, technology, research and nature closer to citizens through an artistic and aesthetic vision. As a novelty, in this 2009 edition the contest used the social media network Facebook as a support. Thus, participation was open to any image that had not been awarded in other contests. A total of 248 people and 584 photographs were submitted.
The jury was formed by Rubén Alcolea, Deputy Director of the School of Architecture and specialist in contemporary photography; the photographer Manuel Castells; and María de los Ángeles Hernández, professor of Zoology at the School de Ciencias.
