During the Mariological Week held in Lérida, the Spanish Mariological Society elected Dr. Antonio Aranda Lomeña, professor at the University of Navarra, as its new President. Passionist Luis Diez Merino continues as vice-president and Fermín Labarga and Román Sol join the board as new members.

The Spanish Mariological Society was founded in 1940 thanks to the initiative, among others, of Fr. Narciso García Garcés, CMF, its first president. Its goal is the scientific research on everything related to the Virgin Mary. It has organized several congresses and, annually since 1941, it celebrates the Mariological Week, fruit of which are the 80 volumes of the magazine "programs of study Marianos". At present, it has almost a hundred members, all of them recognized specialists in Marian themes.

The new president, Antonio Aranda Lomeña, Full Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the School of Theology at the University of Navarra since 1992, has been Dean of the School of Theology at the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce (Rome), as well as Director of the journals Scripta Theologica and Annales Theologici. He is also a Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Doctors. He has been a member of the Spanish Mariological Society since 2000, and has been a member of its board board of directors as board member for various periods.

Previous presidents of the Spanish Mariological Society have been the Jesuits José Antonio Aldama and Cándido Pozo, the Franciscan Gaspar Calvo Moralejo, the priest of the diocese of Sigüenza, Félix Ochayta, and the Carmelite Enrique Llamas.
