"There is an interesting movement, that of the alternative theaters, where one is surprised to see how within the small capacity of these theaters, there is a attendance and an influx that we could call massive, within the minority character of the theater," said veteran playwright José Sanchis Sinisterra at the University of Navarra.

"When these small theaters manage to survive in a more comfortable way and the public authorities realize that this theater should be supported generously, there will be a door for new audiences," he added. "Alternative venues should be encouraged."

José Sanchis spoke to a large audience group of students of the University of Navarra and students of the Navarra School of Theater about his long dramatic career, within the series "Spanish Theater and Poetry of the last decades". This lecture series is organized by the department of Spanish Literature of the University of Navarra, the Office of the Vice President of Students and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

The playwright highlighted the emergence of new authors. "All over Spain a new generation of authors between 25 and 35 years old is appearing, with an enormous desire to write theater, when it seemed that theater was dead. It is a writing where there is everything but, at the same time, it is very promising: there is a lot of innovation and, therefore, a great potential for the future."

Devastating role of television

According to Sanchis Sinisterra, "the problem is that the theater system is still very much in the hands of the directors, who ignore and underestimate this new theater and prefer to resort to contemporary classics or successful authors from abroad. Then there are the criteria of the programmers, who run theaters in the big cities and provinces, and are based on a very quantitative criterion, very audience oriented, so that they only hire a theater subject that guarantees them a massive response from their audience. In addition, the public policy for the promotion of theater is quite deficient. In final, there is a new dramaturgy that knocks on the doors of the theater and a theater system that turns a deaf ear or, literally, rejects it".

He also acknowledged that in Spain not many people go to the theater and, in this sense, "the devastating role of television is very negative, not only for the theater but for all forms of culture and thought. On the other hand, he commented that "a good theatrical work can be a factor of entertainment and amusement, even of evasion of reality, but it is also a way of knowledge and of enrichment of the sensibility, and of change of perspectives on the world. What happens is that this totality is rarely given".
