Jorge Segura Domínguez, a student at Santa María do Mar high school in A Coruña, won the 'Matenet 2001' contest, organized by the technical school of Engineers of the University of Navarra. This game, which consists of solving mathematical problems over the Internet, has registered in this edition more than 600 participants from schools all over Spain, an average of 137 answers per week and 54,355 visits to the web. It is thus consolidated as a state mathematical contest through the network.

The final was held on the campus of the University of Navarra in San Sebastian. The winner, who had already finished second in the initial phase of the competition, pointed out that the final had been different from the previous one. "It's not the same doing it from home and without pressure as it is here, but the effort was worth it. Everything has been great: the school, the organization, the atmosphere... it's much more than I expected," he said. His award was a staff computer with full multimedia equipment.

Educational possibilities of the network

Carlos Segura González, from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and María Hijosa Valsero, from León, took second and third place, respectively. Both agreed that the level of the competition had been quite high, although, in their opinion, the problems had result easy.

A laptop computer was raffled among the participating schools during the prize submission . "The support of Caja Laboral, the Correo group and each and every one of the teachers and schools has been fundamental to the success of the competition", said Manuel Jiménez Conde, Deputy Director of the technical school of Engineers and member of the organization. For this professor, the competition "has shown the educational possibilities of the network and the communicative advantages it offers to today's youth".
