University ranks first in quality according to national study
Three sociologists have drawn up a ranking of Spanish universities
The University of Navarra is at the head of Spanish universities in a study on quality, carried out by three sociologists at the University of Barcelona and Georgetown University (Washington DC). The book is degree scroll "Excellence. Calidad de las Universidades españolas" and is published by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (Madrid, 2001).
Using official statistics data the 1990s, the authors used 71 indicators divided into six factors: provincial development , organizational structure, human and material resources, feminization, doctorate and productivity.
From the analysis and correlation of data we have arrived at five indicators to measure overall quality: centers with long careers, faculty ratio, library books per student, percentage of women professors, doctoral degrees per thousand students and students completing the degree program in the right years. Of the five indicators, the University of Navarra is first in three of them (faculty per student, doctoral degrees per thousand students and students completing the degree program in the right years) and second in books per student in university libraries. The only indicator that leave is the number of female professors (23).
Combining the different indexes according to statistical formulas, the result gives the first place among Spanish universities to the University of Navarra. In a complete quality order, the University of Navarra appears with 8.56 points and the second place goes to the University of Comillas, with 5.3.
The book highlights the high issue of professors, three times the national average , and of professors, both in its Schools and in its university schools. There are six students per professor, which places it, in the opinion of these experts, at an international level of research university. The University has a good library which, although it is not the largest in the country, is the second largest in Spain in terms of the issue of books and students. The profile is therefore that of a university with sufficient resources, including an adequate level of human capital.
The book by professors Jesús M. de Miguel (firstFull Professor Prince of Asturias" in the USA, Full Professor at the University of Barcelona, National award in Social Sciences), Jordi Caïs Master's Degree in Social Policy from the London School of Economics, PhD in Sociology and graduate in Economics from the University of Barcelona) and Elizabeth Vaquera (Sociology graduate and researcher) is the first rigorous attempt to establish what parameters guarantee a quality ranking in universities.
In the chapter on doctorate programs of study , the authors highlight the low rate of doctorates in our country. "The University of Navarra is in the lead: Navarra is a special case in the organization of doctorates, with 89 doctorate students per thousand students (2.2 times more than the Spanish average ), with 15 doctoral degrees (4.1 times more than the Spanish average ), and a productivity of doctors per doctorate of 18% (1.8 times more than the national average )".

For the second consecutive year, the newspaper El Mundo publishes a study on fifty university careers, in which it establishes the five best Spanish universities.
In this report the University of Navarra appears as the best in Spain in two degrees, second in three, third in three others and fourth in one. In total, nine degrees are in the top positions. Only the public universities of Madrid and Barcelona have a greater issue of degrees in this ranking of the top five. In this regard, it should be taken into account that only 21 of the 50 degrees studied are taken at the University of Navarra, which raises the total percentage.
According to El Mundo, in order to carry out the assessment , the newspaper has used 25 indexes that summary those proposed by the Ministry of Education in its quality plan for universities and has counted on the opinion of experts in different fields.
In the document, the University of Navarra appears as the best private university in Spain. The degrees of Journalism and Audiovisual Communication have obtained the first place, according to the mentioned study. Medicine, Humanities and Human Nutrition are in second place.
