"Wars, conflicts and catastrophes resist spectacularization and their profound human dimension must be highlighted". This was stated at the University by Francisco Javier Pérez-Latre during the closing ceremony of the XVII International congress of Communication "Professionals for a globalized future". The meeting featured 50 papers and presentations from 19 Spanish universities and from countries such as Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Australia and Germany.

Professor Pérez-Latre, organizer of these conference, explained that during the sessions "the use of new technologies has been analyzed. We have never had access to so many sources of knowledge. At the same time, the quantity of data should not make us lose sight of its quality: in the face of acceleration, as Professor Montserrat Herrero said, we should stop and think".

For him, "the congress has highlighted the need to reflect and to do so in the best university tradition. For example, it is important to know history, as Professor Mercedes Montero has explained, so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past. People who aspire to be educated live a fascinating life, which is reflected in a work that is renewed every day with old and ancient ideas, as the classics of advertising wrote. And we also need continuous training .

Forgetting dichotomies that no longer hold true

Professor Pérez-Latre also stressed the topic of the "search for truth": "It is inherent to all university knowledge, but in the world of communication it acquires special relevance, because it is the basis of its raw subject , as Professor Carlos Barrera has argued. But telling the truth can also be very costly: this year, as the Colombian César Mauricio Velásquez has pointed out, 12 journalists have been murdered in his country, 42 have been threatened with death and more than 30 have had to leave the country".

It is important," he continued, "to educate professionals who will build a better 'humanity', as Frank Morgan, president of the International Media research association .. To achieve this, it seems necessary to forget dichotomies that are no longer intellectually sustainable. The humanistic foundation of the programs of study Communication has been the topic of another of the work groups, and has come out very reinforced in the intellectual debates of the congress".

As to whether the media should only be a reflection of reality, Professor Pérez-Latre commented: "In democratic societies the media cannot be satisfied with being witnesses: the 'Mirror Theory' has been one of the great theoretical victims of this congress. Giving the public what it supposedly wants is not the first duty of the media: their main task is to communicate as well as possible; they must be builders of peace and solidarity, mobilize audiences, not just entertain them. It is convenient to think that the media are more legitimized by their credibility than by their consumption indexes or ratings. Moreover, as Frank Morgan has explained, media consumption is declining, is it because they are entertaining, but not credible?
