On January 30 took place the III Lesson "The aims of the Education" which, on this occasion, had as speaker Professor Rafael García Pérez, who delivered the lecture entitled "Defragmenting the University. The Core Curriculum as framework integrator of knowledge".

During his speech, Professor Garcia Perez exposed the status of the contemporary university in which there has been a compartmentalization of knowledge. The specialization and the change in contemporary society have led to a fragmentation of the programs of study plans, making it difficult for the student to have a unitary knowledge of the world and society. Faced with this reality, the former President of the University of California, Clark Kerr, coined the term "multiversity".

"Fidelity to its raison d'être demands from the university institution a continuous renewal to enlighten society" said Rafael García and for this reason, it is not enough to make a diagnosis of the status but it is necessary to look for a solution proposal . Thus was born in the United States the Core Curriculum, which from its beginnings was "linked to the idea of a humanistic perspective of the Education".

It was in 2007, as a result of the adaptation of the study plans to the European Higher Education Area Education , that the University of Navarra introduced a new Core Curriculum, which includes subjects in anthropology, ethics, cultural keys and theology. The study and reflection on the great questions of human existence contribute to the development intellectual maturity of the students. In addition to this, Professor Garcia Perez, highlighted as goal of Core Curriculum "to encourage students to be open to other disciplines, so that they acquire an integrative vision of knowledge".

Throughout his speech, Rafael García explained the purpose, contents and methodology of Core Curriculum at the University of Navarra. The great works of literature and thought, the manifestations of art or the advances in science are the contents through which the professor seeks to accompany the student in his journey towards the truth and become the protagonist of his own life. Professor García Pérez concluded by quoting Professor Alejandro Llano: "what is relevant in the university training is not "filling your head with data"; what is relevant "is to discover the keys that give meaning to the facts".
