statement of the University in view of the October 30 event

The University of Navarra has not authorized the activity announced by Vito Quiles on campus tomorrow, Thursday, October 30. As a university institution, curricular and extracurricular activities held on campus must be framed within specific subjects, for which professors are responsible, or initiatives approved by the University authorities.

The University of Navarra is a space for pluralism, dialogue, controversy and discussion of ideas, in which there is no room for political activism or personal interests, as stated in article 32.2 of its Statutes, which states that "in no case shall party political activities be permitted".

In addition, recent events involving Vito Quiles at other universities have shown a climate of confrontation and verbal and physical violence between sides, which have nothing to do with what is expected of an academic event. In this week in which we commemorate the anniversary of the last attack at the University of Navarra on October 30, 2008, we recall that our institution has suffered violence and its consequences over the years. Therefore, we reiterate our commitment to peaceful coexistence.

The response that the University of Navarra has always maintained in the face of violence has been: to do what we are called to do, research and teach, protecting the University as the place of study and serene analysis. This is stated in the institutional declaration of pluralism published in 2021: "University classrooms are the place where professors and students must be able to dialogue freely on all aspects of knowledge in an atmosphere of coexistence". 

Likewise, the coexistencerules and regulations published in 2024 encourage professors, employees and students to maintain the University of Navarra's university style and work environment that advocates respect for the individual, responsibility, loyal work and service to others.

At this time, the University is working to ensure an academic environment in which it is possible to deploy its service to society through normality in the classrooms and on the university campus . And, for this reason, it is grateful for the partnership that the Government Delegation and, in particular, the National Police will provide to guarantee this normality.
