"Medicine is like life itself, a quest staff. It is very important that all you seek is not security and comfort. Be daring and have a touch of adventure". These were the words of Dr. Jon Ariceta, general surgeon at the Navarro Hospital Complex, on the occasion of his intervention at a lecture organized by the conference Interactive Surgery for Students of the School of Medicine of the University of Navarra.

Throughout his exhibition he made a tour of his professional degree program that has been developed in countries such as Angola, Cambodia, Chad or Pakistan, among others. "With my words, I intend to explain my own experience and reflect not only on what led me to become a surgeon, but also on what led me to become a doctor. You also have to think about what led you to study medicine," he explained. "In my case, developing a medical degree program that was out of the ordinary was not easy, but I have no regrets."

In this way, he told the students how he had to be evacuated from the country where he was for security reasons or his work in areas seriously affected by anti-personnel mines, among other personal experiences. Finally, he stressed the importance of"understanding the role of a doctor as that of a healer" and always having the patient as the central axis of the profession. "In addition, I think it is very important to have a human experience, whether in the third world or here, in the fourth world that surrounds us."

Great expectations for the new conference

The activity was organized by the conference Interactive Surgery for Students of the University of Navarra whose goal is to bring surgery closer to students of Schools of Medicine from all over Spain and which will take place in February 2017. Clínica Universidad de NavarraDr. Martínez Regueiro, who encouraged the students to get more training, "being the best doctors possible, is how you can help the most"; and the Vice-Dean for Students and Academic Organization, Dr. Arantza Campo, who highlighted "the satisfaction I feel when I see the great initiative of our students".
