Carlos Centeno, physician and researcher of the University, receives the highest award award of the European Society for Palliative Care.

The main researcher of the ATLANTES Program of the ICS and director of Palliative Medicine of the Clinic receives the award in the 16th World Palliative Care congress

Carlos Centeno, researcher principal of the ATLANTES Program of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) and director of Palliative Medicine of the Clínica Universidad de NavarraThe EAPC AWARD 2019, the highest distinction awarded by the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC), has been presented to Carlos Centeno. The submission took place on May 23 during the opening ceremony of the 16th congress World Palliative Care in Berlin (Germany).

With this award, the EAPC honors outstanding contributions to palliative care development in Europe and worldwide. In the case of Dr. Centeno, the Society has particularly highlighted his work as coordinator of the Atlas of Palliative Care in Europe at framework of the ATLANTES Program of the ICS. Precisely, the third edition, recently completed, was presented at the world meeting in the German capital. The whole of his research degree program has also been highlighted, as well as the promotion of the medical Education in palliative care at the University.

Care of advanced and terminally ill patients

Carlos Centeno is graduate (1986) and PhD (1992) in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Valladolid. He is a university specialist in Bioethics (1995) and Master's Degree in Palliative Medicine (2000). He specialized in Radiation Oncology (1997) at the University Hospital of Valladolid, where he participated in the implementation of the first palliative care team in Castilla y León. He was Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Alberta in Canada (1998) and later collaborated in the implementation of the Regional Center for Palliative Medicine at the Hospital Los Montalvos in Salamanca.

For fifteen years he has been director of Palliative Medicine of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and since 2012 he combines his healthcare activity with the work of researcher main of the ATLANTES Program of the ICS. This project aspires to promote in society and in medicine a positive mentality regarding the attention and care of patients with advanced and irreversible disease, from a vision based on the dignity of the person and professional care, which includes the accompaniment and respect for the natural course of the disease, and attention to the emotional and spiritual dimension of the person.
