A fifth year student of Biology and Biochemistry of the University of Navarra, María Medrano,
has participated this summer in the excavation work being carried out at the Atapuerca sites (Burgos). Specifically, the student of the School of Sciences has participated in the work at Gran Dolina, at level TD10, one of the sites of the railroad trench.

Together with other volunteers from different parts of the world, Medrano was in charge of taking out pieces (bones, lithic industry...), putting them in labeled bags and indicating on them the coordinates, the site and the subject of the piece it was. "This was the work we did in the mornings, since in the afternoon we went to laboratory where we checked, washed, classified and identified the pieces recovered in the morning. We also did reconstruction work on the pieces," says the student.

"The experience has been wonderful, because in addition to working in such a fascinating site as Atapuerca, I have been able to share my time with people from other countries and from many different scientific disciplines (paleontology, biology, archeology, geology, history...). Excavating and being able to talk with them has been very enriching for me", says María Medrano.

It is an experience that will help him to better focus his professional future, since "what we did there is different from what we do at degree program, but the knowledge we acquired at subject in Geology was very useful for me to be able to work for the Atapuerca Foundation", he concludes.
