"If the European Union wants to remedy the growing disaffection of citizens towards community institutions and representatives, it needs to abandon the moral relativism and ambiguity of its project to address a necessary reflection on the common principles and values of Europe". This is the conclusion of Álex Corona Encinas, researcher of the Chair Álvaro d'Ors del Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra, in his informative essay The "Christian roots" of Europe in the failed project of the European Constitution.
In his text, the expert provides some reflections that help to interpret the influence of Christianity in the European Union and how this heritage tried to be reflected in the ill-fated project of the European Constitution.
"The accredited specialization to the'Christian heritage of Europe', a commitment staff, largely by Pope John Paul II, became a controversial subject and collided with the fierce civil service examination of some members of the constitutional commission", he points out. This reference letter, according to him, was defended by states such as Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal or the Czech Republic.
The researcher of the ICS defends that "the question of the Christian heritage of Europe is an unavoidable historical reality" and that this reference letter would have had the purpose of emphasizing that this tradition "has contributed to the creation of the European identity and, in particular, to the assumption of a series of common and proper values".
