24 | 10 | 2024

October 24th is the International Day against climate change. And in this context, the researcher Zaida Ortega has given the session "Antarctica: my journey in science from animal behavior to climate change" in the School of Sciences of the University of Navarra, where she has made a journey through her professional career. This initiative was promoted by the group Women for Science and Technology and was attended by more than 80 students and professionals of the Schools of the area Science.

According to the scientist from Palencia, a turning point in her professional life was her trip to the Isla del Aire (Menorca) to study the behavior of the Balearic lizard as an initial part of her research, and then continue with her doctoral thesis on thermal biology (activity, operating temperature and preferred temperatures) that she was able to test in different species of the Balearic Islands, León, Andorra or Portugal, among other locations.

In his efforts to understand the behavior of animals, he conducted some programs of study on thermal self-regulation with different animals (turtles, beluga whales, anteaters, lizards) in universities such as Granada or Berlin. In addition, he did a postdoctoral stay in Brazil where he was able to work on the ecology of movement, topic related to the mechanisms of animal behavioral thermoregulation: area of championships, habitat selection, trajectories.

Dr. Ortega is admitted in 2019 in a women's leadership and climate change program (89 women from 18 different countries) where she participated for two years from training remotely and already in 2023 she was part of the largest women's expedition to Antarctica. "Part of the day we were going to visit a terrestrial area to learn about the environment and biodiversity and the other part of the day corresponded to the training part (exhibition of projects, constructive-collaborative leadership sessions, diversity and inclusion, ecological crises and complex systems and One Health)" she assures.

For Zaida Ortega, it is interesting to carry out global programs of study that can be published in high impact journals in order to have the possibility of having a greater presence in the media and, in this way, seek the support of institutions to make changes in major issues such as biodiversity and climate change
