Dr. José Luis Lanciego, principal researcher of the Gene Therapy in Parkinson's Disease group at the Cima University of Navarra, has been appointed new president of the European Brain Foundation (EBF), a reference letter organization in Europe for the promotion of research in neurological and mental diseases.

The EBF is a non-profit organization promoted by the European Brain Council, of whose committee of directors Dr. Lanciego is also a member. Its goal is to promote the funding of scientific projects aimed at reducing the social, health and economic impact of brain diseases, which affect about one third of the European population.

With an established track record in the study of neurodegenerative diseases, Dr. Lanciego focuses his research on the development of gene therapies applied to preclinical models of Parkinson's disease. As President of the EBF, Dr. Lanciego's mission statement is to advocate with the European Commission and the European Parliament for increased European Union funding for neurological and mental illnesses. "Through the EBF we will work to respond to the common challenge of boosting research in brain diseases, supporting innovative projects that improve the quality of life of patients and their families," says the researcher.

The European Brain Foundation brings together the main players in the brain research ecosystem: scientific societies, clinical professional associations (neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropediatricians, psychiatrists), patient organizations and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry. Its independent nature allows it to generate synergies between these sectors and to act as a catalyst for European initiatives in this field.
