The results of the Navarre Biofood strategic project , funded by the Government of Navarra, have demonstrated the beneficial effects of water kefir and olive polyphenols to prevent obesity.

Within this project, coordinated by the business Biosasun, the research center in Nutrition of the University of Navarra (CIN) has carried out a study in which the possible beneficial effects of the consumption of a water kefir and a prebiotic compound rich in olive polyphenols, developed by the business Biosasun, in partnership with the National Center for Food Technology and Safety (CNTA), have been evaluated.

The results of this research have shown that supplementation of the per diem expenses with water kefir and this prebiotic could be useful in regulating body weight. In addition, these substances significantly decreased the weight of adipose tissue and liver. Finally, they also improved total and HDL cholesterol levels, suggesting that the consumption of these products could have beneficial effects in the prevention of liver and cardiovascular diseases associated with obesity

These findings open a window of possibilities for promoting the consumption of fermented and prebiotic products in the prevention of development obesity and its associated metabolic complications.

The project will now try to solve some of the main challenges related to the development of this subject of products and promote their consumption, which have to do with the limited knowledge of their mechanisms of action, influence on the intestinal microbiota, heterogeneity in terms of composition, regulatory requirements , etc.

To obtain new ingredients and foods that help to prevent diseases.
Biofood (use of biotechnology to obtain ingredients and foods beneficial to health) is funded by the Government of Navarra in the framework of the call for Projects of research and development Strategic SIBERIA, which is coordinated by Biosasun and has the participation of Brotalia, LEV2050, Nucaps, Eztitsu and CNTA, in addition to the University of Navarra.

The project Biofood, the only one C by the Government of Navarra in 2019, within the challenge SIBERIA (Innovative Solutions in Biotechnology for Energy, Health Challenges, Industry and Agri-Food), researches microbial bioprocesses that lead to new ingredients (probiotics and prebiotics) and fermented foods, which help to improve health and prevent the development of diseases such as obesity and its associated complications.
