Understanding the biological mechanisms underlying aging and its relationship with inflammatory and metabolic processes will be the focus of the scientific workshop "Frontiers in Aging, Immune Metabolism and Inflammation", organized by the Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry and the research center in Nutrition (CIN) of the University of Navarra, with the partnership of CIBEROBN and IdiSNA. The event, organized by the professors of the School of Pharmacy and Nutrition María Jesús Moreno-Aliaga, Mª Pilar Lostao and Elena Puerta, will take place on June 13 at the Sciences Building of the University.

The workshop will bring together 350 national and international researchers, both in person and online, in core topic areas such as immunometabolism, inflammation and diseases associated with aging such as obesity, fatty liver disease, subject 2 diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

"Aging is a physiological process that favors the development various pathologies. Therefore, understanding its mechanisms and associated pathologies is essential to promote strategies that lead to healthy and active aging," explains Dr. María Jesús Moreno-Aliaga, coordinator of the Nutrition and Molecular Metabolism area of the CIN. "For example, immunosenescence and inflammation associated with aging (inflammaging) have been considered key factors for the development most age-related pathologies, including metabolic diseases such as obesity, fatty liver and subject 2 diabetes, as well as cancer".

"In addition, neuroinflammation associated with aging also contributes to the development of cognitive impairment and pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease," adds Dr. Puerta, of the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

As Moreno-Aliaga points out, the speakers invited to the workshop arerenowned experts from international institutions of great prestige and scientific trajectory: "We believe that their participation will enrich a rigorous and updated exchange of knowledge on advances in research". Thus, María Blasco (CNIO, Madrid); Michael T. Heneka (University of Luxembourg), Xabier AgirreCima, University of Navarra, CIBERONC), Rubén Nogueiras(University of Santiago de Compostela, CIBEROBN), Jesmond Dalli (Queen Mary University of London) and Antonio Vidal-Puig (University of Cambridge, CIBERDEM) will participate.

In addition, Dr. Pilar Lostao emphasizes that this workshop will serve to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry, an international scientific journal of the University of Navarra, of which the organizers are editors, and which is published by the publishing house Springer-Nature.
